How to Enjoy Your Family Vacations

family vacation

We are a family who loves taking vacations somewhere else. It may not be very far but we like the feeling of being away from home for a breather. And my kids would always look forward to staying in a hotel. And so, how do we enjoy family vacations?

  • Make a list of what to do on your vacation before leaving your house.
  • If you are driving, make sure you have enough gas
  • Find out the things you can do and places to visit in the place of destination.
  • Be flexible
  • Book your hotel days ahead
  • Don’t ever forget to pack your camera and check that all camera accessories are intact.
  • Just enjoy the vacation!

Wow. Writing this makes me want to have a vacation soon. I wonder if we could ever go and use one of those Outer Banks vacation rentals. It seems so far away from where we live. But hey, nobody really knows the future right? One day, I might find myself awake on one of the rentals there, enjoying my vacation with my family.

Who knows!

Family Recreation

When we become parents, we constantly think of ways to entertain our kids. One of the things we do is plan for family recreation. In Malaysia, I find we can do so many things. We can go fishing, camping, trekking, going to the malls, playing at games arcades in the malls, etc. Possibilities are limitless.

One thing I wanna do is going camping with my family when the kids are grown a little more. As far as I know, we don’t have recreation vehicles in Malaysia. Otherwise, I think, there will be a lot of families with rv’s that have rv extended warranty.

There are actually websites that offer warranties for recreational vehicles, motorhome, etc. All we need to do is surf the net.

Anyways, with or without rv, I’m sure we’re going camping with my family next time.

car seats

good quality car seats are important for traveling with kids. when my first child was born, we bought a brand new carseat for him, sponsored by a friend from the US. i was told to never buy a second hand car seats as we don’t know how the first owner handled it or whether it had been in a car accident already. but of course, when baby girl, my second child, came out and we desperately need to have a car seat for her, i looked up from e-bay for some secondhand ones. i found one which was fairly new, the baby barely used the car seat. and it was for a good price. i forgot the brand but i think it’s mothercare. you know if it’s mothercare, you would know it’s of good quality. in UK, you are not allowed to travel with kids without car seats. here in Malaysia, they haven’t imposed it yet. but when my family and i have a long-distance travel, we make sure to use car seats for both my kids. better be safe than be sorry.

Shopping Malls in Malaysia

I have a few favorites among the shopping malls in Malaysia and most of them are found in my area, in Subang Jaya.

Sunway Pyramid – this is a very posh mall. I love the Egyptian Pyramind inspired design of the building. There is quite a good variety of shops inside. You can get signature products at the individual boutiques and street fashion at Asian Avenue. I’m not so much into street fashion though so I don’t really visit Asian Avenue. But recently, with my need to shop for my new home, going to Sunway Pyramid seemed to be very convenient in getting the things I need for my new house.

Subang Parade – my hubby’s favorite mall. It’s probably the oldest shopping mall in Malaysia. My hubby loves the fact that he doesn’t have to roam around so much to get what he needs. Simply say, the mall is small. But it is family friendly. We go to Games Arcade from time to time to spend time with our kids. I love the MPH bookstore in Subang Parade as well. And we grocery shop at Cold Storage if we need to do our groceries and we’re too lazy to drive to the next building which is Carrefour.

Ikea – It’s a furniture mall that offers just about anything you need when your house is your concern. They have Swedish Food available as well. We go for Swedish meatballs everytime we go there. I like the fact that they have showrooms for every corner of the house so you can get interior design ideas when you go there. Like I always say, I never go out of Ikea empty-handed.

These malls are my top 3 favorites. I’m sure all of these malls have great POS systems as they’re really doing well.I just wish that Ikea is just nearby. If you are in Malaysia, take a tour on these malls. I’m sure you will be impressed.

Importance of Family Activities

As a family, it is important to go for a break or getaway from time to time. It fosters bonding between members of the family. Fathers could be busy because of the nature of their jobs and gets few or no time alone for the family. Mothers could get very busy keeping the household together and yet not enough time to spend with kids and husbands. Children could get very busy playing or studying or by being with peers they spent less and less time with the parents. The very obvious solution is for each member of the family to pause in whatever they’re doing and go for a vacation just with family alone. How do we set family time and how often?

  • once a day – set aside one hour a day to talk. It could be around the table for a meal. Talk about the experiences you have had for that day.
  • once a week – set aside one day a week to be with the family. Usually, Sunday is the best time to do so. You may go to church for worship or go to a park, or go to a cinema. The possibilities are endless. We just started going to the cinema as a family. My boy is already almost 4 years old and my girl is almost 2 years old. Glad both of them did very well inside the cinema. We watched Wall-E. The first ever movie we watched in the cinema as a family
  • once a month – stay overnight somewhere else.
  • once a year – go for a 3-5 day vacation. There are a lot of holiday destinations available and you can check them online. Cheaperthanhotels.com offers a last minute accommodation deals for the family. The offers could come with free breakfast, free usage of facilities or even free access to the internet. They have hotels all over Europe.

One of the best memories we have as a family is when we go for a break. We could do things together without interruptions. We could discover new things together. And the best of all, we could create a more special bond as a family.

Family Breakaways

If you’re like me who is into going for family breakaways, you might think of some ideas to do it without spending too much. My family just came back from a long holiday. It was awesome but it left me without anything in my pocket. I planned that break last year, booked our tickets way in advance to get cheaper air fares, planned our trip so that we would stay at a minimum budget.

I spent so much for that holiday. But next time, I would want to go for a holiday that won’t require much. Stay within the country, probably do rv camping, visiting another town, etc. There are just so many options.

That is really one thing I like about Malaysia. We could do so many things within close proximity. No need to travel far thus, saving more money, doing more trips. It’s a win-win situation.

How to Enjoy Family Holiday – Part 2

I have written about how to enjoy family holiday in the past. I think my tips weren’t enough so I want to add some more:

1. When you’re in your holiday destination, don’t forget to go to the place where the country is famous for. For example, Macau is famour for entertainment. We visited some of the entertainment buildings they have. I am glad I did coz I truly appreciated their colonial buildings. Some were steel buildings and I still admire there.

2. After budgeting your money, set aside some extra cash just in case.

3. Don’t forget to bring first aid kit as well.

4. Don’t overdo your holiday. Take a rest. Relax. It is very crucial, especially with kids around. Once the kids get tired, they become very grumpy. So it’s always the best to rest once in a while.
