Learn How To Nurture Smarter Kids

I have been receiving an editor’s article for brainyzine from time to time… It’s quite a good read. So I’m sharing this with you:

Hi Janet,
Traditional parenting techniques always relied on teaching children how to study for school, study hard and get very good grades. Scholastic and academic achievement were two of the most important yardsticks that were used to measure the individual’s intelligence and skills. However, well-known academicians and education experts now believe that scholastic and academic skills are not only the parameters needed to ensure your child’s success. Your children need more sophisticated and polished brain building abilities and capacities that can provide a forward momentum to build their future life from scratches.

Smart play is a technique of using highly productive, interactive and beneficial playtime specially designed and created for your growing children. Smart play is also a playtime that can help your child learn how senses work and in what way they can help them to develop their intellect. Smart play is a new and modern term that helps your child develop basic brain based skills and talent that go far beyond the conventional type of intelligence that is restricted mainly to academic performance.

Active and smart play provides your child an exciting time of learning and mastering unique life skills that will go a long way in ensuring both professional and personal success. There are a number of skills and processes that your children simply cannot learn and master, unless they apply the basic principles of smart play. Brain building through smart play is a continuous process that helps you build your child’s brain by empowering to critically think, seriously probe and evaluate complex things that occur around them.

There are several ways and methods that help parents develop their children’s brain. While unconventional methods help you to create your own smart play episodes inside your house, corporate toy manufacturers design and create some of the most thoughtful and ingenious smart playthings and toys that can help your child develop a number of important skills like cognitive, fine motor, social, mechanical and critical thinking skills. All the best!

Blindfold Reading Method?

I was just surfing the net and found another reading method. It sounds so impossible… teaching your kid toblindfoldreading005 read blindfolded. But according to them:

Children, who have attended the Blind-fold Method Course, show unbelievable hidden potential. They can basically ‘See’ and ‘Read’ using their brainwave signals. It may sound unbelievable at first. However, after you have witness your child and other children showing this ability after the course, you won’t be surprised anymore.

There is one common question asked. Why let your child learn blind-fold reading method when they can read using their eyes? To be able to ‘See’ and ‘Read’ blind-folded, it shows and proves that your child’s Midbrain function is awakened (activated). Once Midbrain is awakened, your child’s hidden potential will be unleashed one by one…

Your child might demonstrate one or more of the following abilities:

~ Photographic memory
~ Super IQ
~ Speed Learning
~ Multiple Languages Mastery
~ Computer Calculation Speed
~ Perfect-pitch (music mastery)
~ Creative Talent
~ Sport Excellence
~ Superb Intuition
~ Joyful and confidence personality

What is Midbrain?

Midbrain (Mesencephalon) acts like a communication bridge connecting left brain and right brain. To balance the usage of left brain and right brain at will, midbrain must be activated and fully functional. Once Midbrain is activated, left brain and right brain can communicate easily and freely. With whole-brain fully functioning at will, hidden potentials will be unleashed.

Left Brain vs. Right Brain

Generally, we categorize Left Brain as Logic/Analysis Brain. As we can see from above, Left Brain functions focus mainly on learning language and analyzing information through languages.

On the other hand, Right Brain is categorized as Image Processing Brain.  Right Brain functions focus mainly on Image processing, like imagination or image idea creation.

What’s the relationship between left brain and right brain in real life?
In real life, we can easily remember the look of a person or a friend, but we can hardly recall his/her name. In fact, the image of a person is directly stored in the right brain, while a person’s name is stored in the left brain. Therefore, it takes more effort to remember a person’s name than the appearance.

Brainy Child

Hi Janet,
Our world is full great personalities and historical people of extreme brilliance and talent. Some of them have been the foremost nation builders and extraordinary leaders, while others are men of letters, great musicians and exemplary scientists. Our world would not have been the same without notable contributions from these great people.
Now, what is common with these legendary personalities?

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Possibly the greatest ever composer of classical music

George Bernard Shaw – One of the greatest play writers

Franklin D. Roosevelt – A president with great character and substance

Thomas Edison – The greatest inventor in the history of mankind

Albert Einstein – The most brilliant human ever

Bobby Fischer – A legendary chess grandmaster and a great world champion

You will be extremely surprised to know that all these great people have one distinctively common thing among them – that they were all the significant products of home-schooling! Successful home-schooled personalities like these come in many flavors and styles. The practice of home-schooling has given us some of the most famous personalities the world has ever seen!
Today’s schools are extremely competitive, too much crowded and at times too insipid for some of our children. The perceived squeezing ambience of such schools may impact and influence some of our children in a negative and discouraging manner, eventually resulting in reduced and disappointing academic and classroom performance. Mind you, such children are not at all bad in their abilities to study and score better grades and ranks. It may just that they do not find the school environment encouraging and positive. Most of our gifted children often find a typical, conventional classroom environment too boring and ordinary.
Parents may need to take a serious note of these instances and provide their children an alternative mode of education in an encouraging and stimulating environment that eventually makes them classroom-enabled and school-compliant. Parents have a number of choices in front of them. Alternative approaches to traditional classroom have been here since hundreds of years and some of the examples of famous people who underwent alternative home schooling are given above.
Home schooling is a credible and alternative approach to a traditional and truly academic styled classroom and it caters to those children, who often find traditional classes very discouraging and incompatible to their taste and preferences. There are a number of other approaches that can be considered by parents. However, home schooling seems to be the most desired option by a number of parents around the world. Though expensive, home schooling offers the benefit of teaching your children in a compatible and loving ambience that stresses on one-to-one type of student-teacher relationship. As a parent, you can study and understand the finer aspects of alternative education and how it can influence your children in a positive manner. This issue of newsletter intends to provide you some basic fundamentals of alternative approaches to education and how one can benefit from it. All the best!

Helen O'Grady Drama Academy

We went to visit Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy yesterday, after church. It wasn’t planned, really. We went to Taipan to buy some soya bean milk for the kids because both of them like it so much. Then we saw that the drama school was just nearby so we phoned to ask whether we could visit the place. It was very timely as they had their yearly production going on. So before speaking with the director, we watch the children perform. We were quite impress with what we saw so we inquired more.

Why Drama?

Drama is used as a developmental platform whereby speech-work, coordination, improvisation activities and exercises are focused upon.  Furthermore, it is an excellent way for children to gain a better feel for the English language and to become more articulate when speaking as well as building up their vocabulary – perfect for both native and non-native English speakers.

Drama allows children the creative outlet of expressing themselves freely, yet constructively!
Drama allows children to imagine the world in their own fresh, bright colors!
Drama allows children to speak confidently without the fear of being judged!

So.. yeah.. we booked a slot for boy for next year’s intake. And his father is very excited. Their acclaimed programme encompasses a huge body of developmental drama activities aimedat the increasing the confidence, self esteem and verbal skills of all students. Enthusiastic participation is encouraged at all times and students present a short, scripted production at the end of each year for parents and friends. Above all, the classes are fun! All Principals and teachers have undergone extensive training in Helen O’Grady curriculum and teaching methods. Helen O’Grady Drama Aacademy is located in Taipan, USJ 10, Subang Jaya.

A Letter from Andrew Loh

I get an email from Andrew Loh of BrainyZine from time to time. I thought of sharing with you his latest letter:

Hi Janet,

All of us know and understand that the world we live is a world full of pessimism and negativity. Most of us are encapsulated or covered by a vicious web of pessimism and negative thoughts that eventually hinder our personal and professional developmental processes, and act as insurmountable obstacles of our life. Unfortunately, as parents we tend to pass on these so called negative traits and characters to our children and their future. All of us want our children to be optimistic and positive in whatever they do or learn. In fact, optimism and expectancy are two of the most critical characters that our children should develop and master. Children who possess and display these two parameters tend to become highly successful in personal and professional life.

Why should parents want their children to be optimistic and expectant of good things, better academic achievements and successful future? Optimism and expectancy are the states of intense anticipation! These are the heavenly feelings that are subjective and that cannot be easily visible! These are the surreal energy that can be enhanced and developed only through personal willpower and repetition. The noble characters of optimism and expectancy are mandatory for reaching goals and objectives.

Children who possess the power of expectancy are better equipped to handle failures, display a very strong sense of personal control and they are better prepared to bounce back again in their life from previous failures. Optimism and expectancy are two of the most important life skills without which we cannot expect our children to be successful in their life. Because, parents are the major partners in developing the thinking styles of their developing children, it is very critical that they do all they can to teach the basic issues of optimism and expectancy to their children.

Available research suggests us that the importance of optimism and expectancy in our children is severely limited by the lack of a developmentally appropriate or correct measure of children’s expectations. Helping your children look on the brighter and sunnier side of life is an important and critical life skill to develop and master. Children can learn optimism and expectancy from their previous experiences or tastes of success, and through their active interactions with parents, teachers and their peers in their classrooms in the first few years of life. All the best!

Brillkids Launches Innovative Flash Card Software

THAT TEACHES BABIES TO READ
Groundbreaking computer software enables parents to teach their babies through personalized flash card-based learning

November 06, 2008 – BrillKids Inc. announces the launch of Little Reader HOME BASIC, a downloadable software tool for parents and educators who wish to teach children to read in an easy, fun and efficient way. Suitable for children aged four months and up, Little Reader enables users to easily create flash cards, using the computer as a powerful platform with which to educate very young children. Incorporating methods developed over several decades by experts in the early learning field in their product’s functionality and design, BrillKids’ Little Reader is able to take advantage of the right-brain learning capabilities of children during the critical early years. Following the success of their online community, BrillKids provides an answer to the needs of parents worldwide for a more convenient program with which to teach their young ones. Even with the burgeoning children’s product market filled with available educational videos, laminated flash cards, and pre-made slideshow presentations, none come close to providing complete customizable solutions for parents who want to teach their children in a more personalized way. “Little Reader is a groundbreaking program from BrillKids,” said KL Wong, CEO of BrillKids Inc. “Not only is it our very first software product to be made commercially available, it is also the project closest to my heart, having created it specifically for parents like me who could not find convenient ways with which I could create and personalize my little daughter’s flash card lessons. To know that Little Reader can put smiles on children’s faces when they see their parents’ pictures on the screen while being taught their first words about family is simply amazing.”

Helping Parents Teach Their Children to Read

Many parents have already witnessed the benefits of using the Little Reader program during the span of its three-month beta testing period. “I have thoroughly enjoyed using Little Reader – I thought I knew a lot about teaching reading to people of all ages – and particularly since I was a follower of Glenn Doman methods 40ish years ago,” said Amanda, a parent from Brazil. “That said – I have found Little Reader totally inspiring – it is very addictive, and it encourages the user to not only make use of the material provided in the program – but to create their own.”

“My kids really love Little Reader,” adds Paola from California. “This software gives my children lessons they can relate to – their own body/family/toys/pets. And the fact that people from all over the world using any language – even dialects – can come together, share concerns and experiences, give one another support, and contribute to the whole is absolutely amazing. I can honestly say that I don’t know of any other software that is as versatile, meaningful and enjoyable as Little Reader.”

Making it Easy for the Busy Parent

BrillKids also offers hundreds of free additional learning library files which Little Reader users can simply download through their online community – a balm for parents who do not have the time to create their own content. “In my very busy schedule as a working mother, I found Little Reader to be perfect teaching tool,” says Jane from South Carolina. “This program saves me so much time in preparing my teaching materials because it’s just so easy to use, turning ‘lesson time’ into ‘bonding time’ for my little Alyssa. The free additional library files are also fantastic – it’s so convenient to just download what I want, when I want them.”

Created by Parents for Parents

An overwhelming number of requests from parents worldwide spurred the creation of Little Reader, and BrillKids made it a point to take the development of this software closer to the hearts of those who inspired it to fruition through its customer-oriented forefront throughout the three-month beta testing period. The company took all suggestions and comments from an international pool of beta testers and integrated functions to satisfy what real parents need from an educational software program for young children. Little Reader’s release brings the company closer to their aims of enhancing the quality of life for parents and parents-to-be, helping them give their child the gift of early literacy.
